Chan May Port Private Car: Everything You Actually Need to Know
So your cruise ship is docking at Chan May and you’re trying to figure out what to do with the day. The shore excursion packages are fine. But if you want to move at your own pace, stop at the Hai Van Pass when you want, skip the group lunch, actually spend time at the Imperial Citadel instead of being rushed through it, then consider booking a private car is the better move.
Where Exactly is Chan May Port?
Chan May sits in Thua Thien Hue Province, about halfway between Hue and Da Nang, roughly 60 km from each city. That’s genuinely useful: you’re equidistant from two of Central Vietnam’s most rewarding destinations, and either one is reachable in under 90 minutes by car.
A few things worth knowing before you arrive: the port itself is a working cargo terminal. There are no restaurants, no ATMs, no wifi. A few souvenir stalls set up when cruise ships come in, but don’t count on much. From your ship to the port gate is about 600 metres, a 10-minute walk. Your driver will be waiting outside the gate. If you want pick-up inside the port, most operators can arrange it for an extra fee (around $25).

Why a Private Car Beats the Ship’s Shore Excursion?
The ship’s tours work. They’re safe, the timing is managed, and you won’t miss departure. But they come with fixed itineraries, big groups, and rushed schedules that rarely match what anyone actually wants from a place like Hue.
With a private car, you set the pace. In case you want to spend an extra 30 minutes at the Khai Dinh Tomb or skip the tourist restaurant & eat at the spot your driver recommends, you can do that. And you’re back at the port gate on your schedule, not the tour bus’s.
The cost difference is often smaller than people expect, particularly for couples or groups splitting the fare.
How Much Does It Cost?
Prices vary by vehicle and route, but as a general guide:
| Vehicle |
Best for |
Day rate (approx.) |
| 4-seat sedan (Vios, Kia) |
Couples, solo |
$125–145 |
| 7-seat MPV (Innova, Xpander) |
Families, small groups |
$145–155 |
| 16-seat van |
Large groups |
$170–190 |
These rates typically include the driver, fuel, tolls, and parking. The important thing: get a fixed all-in price for the day, not a per-kilometre or per-hour rate. Most reputable operators quote this way anyway, but ask to be sure.
The Best Day Trips from Chan May Port
You’ll have roughly 8 hours ashore on a typical cruise stop. Here’s what’s actually doable.
- Hue Imperial City (60 km, about 1.5 hours)
The most obvious choice, and deservedly so. Hue was Vietnam’s imperial capital until 1945, and the scale of what remains is genuinely impressive: a walled citadel, the Forbidden Purple City, royal tombs scattered through the countryside south of the city, the Thien Mu Pagoda rising above the Perfume River.
A full day gives you the Imperial Citadel in the morning, lunch somewhere decent in the city, one of the royal tombs (Khai Dinh is the most dramatic; Tu Duc is the most atmospheric) in the afternoon, and a drive back with time to spare. Don’t try to do all the tombs, just pick one and do it properly.
– Drive time: ~1.5 hours each way
– Minimum time needed: 6 hours
– Best for: History, photography, first-time visitors to Hue.

- Hoi An Ancient Town (80 km, about 1.5 hours)
Slightly further than Hue, and the road goes south through Da Nang rather than straight along the coast. Doable in a day, but the timing is tighter. Leave by 8am, you’ll have three solid hours in the Old Town before heading back.
Hoi An rewards slow walking. The lantern-hung streets, the Japanese Covered Bridge, the merchant houses, the tailors and the riverside cafes it’s the kind of place where a schedule works against you. If you have the choice between Hue and Hoi An for a single day, and you’ve never been to either, Hue gets the nod; it’s closer and there’s more to justify a full day.
– Drive time: ~1.5 hours each way.
– Minimum time needed: 7 hours.
– Best for: Atmosphere, shopping, those who’ve already seen Hue.

- Hai Van Pass + Lang Co Beach (20–30 km, about 30–45 minutes)
If Hue or Hoi An feels like too much for a hot afternoon, this is the low-effort, high-reward option. The Hai Van Pass is one of the most scenic drives in Vietnam. The views over Lang Co Beach from the top are the kind that end up as phone wallpapers.
You can combine this with a few hours at Lang Co Beach itself: a long stretch of sand on a narrow peninsula with the lagoon on one side and the sea on the other, very few tourists, and some decent seafood shacks along the beach road.
– Drive time: ~35 minutes each way
– Minimum time needed: 3–4 hours
– Best for: A relaxed half-day, families with kids, those who just want scenery.

- Da Nang City (55 km, about 1 hour)
Da Nang is more city than cultural destination, but it earns a day if your interests run toward Marble Mountains, Dragon Bridge, or Ba Na Hills. The Marble Mountains are the most worthwhile stop and they’re right on the highway south of Da Nang.
– Drive time: ~1 hour each way
– Minimum time needed: 5–6 hours (Ba Na Hills needs 6–7)
– Best for: Those who want something different from temples and tombs.

What to Watch Out For?
– Cars aren’t permitted inside the port. It’s about 600 metres from the pier to the entrance (a flat 10-minute walk). Your driver will be holding a sign with your name just outside. If mobility is a concern, or you want pick-up at the ship, ask your operator to arrange it in advance (expect a surcharge of $20–25 for the port access fee).
– The tunnel is faster and what most traffic uses. The mountain road over the pass is slower, free, and far more spectacular.
– Most cruise stops are 8 hours. Build in buffer, aim to be back at the port gate 30–45 minutes before your ship’s all-aboard time. Traffic on the return from Hue can build in the late afternoon. Your driver will know this; just make sure the timeline is clear at the start of the day.
